A better tool can change a day’s work. An accurate scanner saves time. A CNC machine repeats a cut. AI helps sort through technical information. None of that makes the person using it less of a craftsperson.
The useful question
When a new tool appears, the first question should not be “is this cheating?” It should be “what problem does it solve, and what should I check before trusting it?” A useful system can reduce repetitive work and leave more time for difficult decisions.
Where AI fits
It can help with research, planning, code, documentation and sometimes diagnosis. Its answers can also be incomplete or wrong. A specification still needs checking against the right manual; a repair still needs the actual fault found; a joint still needs the right procedure.
What we mean by craft
Not stubbornly refusing change. Not pretending yesterday’s machine was better because it was older. Craft is learning how to use the tools of your time, understanding your material and being answerable for the result. That is the work we want to celebrate.
