SDS-Plus vs SDS-Max: start with the job, not the tool

Two different toolholder systems, two typical scales of masonry work. A useful way to select a rotary hammer.

The question is not which label sounds more professional. It is what the tool needs to do for the next few hundred holes—or for a long day of chiselling.

Start with the work

SDS-Plus rotary hammers are commonly selected for anchor holes, light drilling and lighter chiselling. SDS-Max tools are generally larger and designed for higher-impact tasks such as bigger concrete holes and more demanding demolition. Hilti makes that distinction in its professional guide.

Do not compare joules in isolation

Impact energy is useful information, but it is not the entire workday. Check recommended bit diameter, weight, vibration control, dust extraction, available bits and chisels, and how the machine feels at the actual working angle. Manufacturer data is more useful when it matches the job rather than the biggest number on the product page.

Bits, chucks and systems

Check the precise chuck and accessory compatibility. SDS-Plus and SDS-Max are not interchangeable directly. When using a specific core bit or attachment, follow the actual hammer manufacturer’s limits.

What we have not done

We have not run a side-by-side test or timed drilling into the same concrete. This is a selection guide based on published professional guidance, not a performance ranking of brands.

Concrete drilling creates hazardous dust. Choose an appropriate extraction method and follow local workplace rules and manufacturer instructions.
